BHAU
AS ORGANIZER
The restoration period for chess started since 1955. In old days chess
was played almost in every house. Sangli has contributed a lot in the
field of chess. In those days Indians were indifferent towards chess.
In such critical time the people in Sangli sustained and developed this
game. Before Nutan Buddhibal Mandal some institutions also took efforts.
Shri Rambhau Bhide, Deshmukh established southern Maratha Country Chess
Club in1920. This club was started on the upstairs of late Govindrao
Padasalgikar. In 1929: ate Vishnupant Rajwade, Dadasaheb Gadgil and
Tamannacharya padasalgikar form Chess Society, Sangli these institutions
gave chess a gift of life.
He
On 23rd December 1941, Late Bhausaheb Rajwade, Dajisaheb Dixit, Sopanrao
Shingare, Bhaurao padsalgikar and other friends established Nutan Buddhibal
Mandal on every Saturday at night the members of Manda would round up
on the upstairs of Chitaman Press on Harbhat Toad. In the same year
Mandal held Competitions. As the Competitions were for children, elders
and youths it gave opportunity to everybody. This created the atmosphere
of sports in the city.
In 1943 he held competitions for 'Pravin' players. As the Competitions
were held on a large scale some donation was required for expenses.
Most of the members were engrossed in their business and at that time
in 1946 Bhaurao collected 100 Rupees. It was his beginning of his social
work. Some period was critical. But again in 1954 Bhaurao held competitions.
He was selected as Secretary of the club. For the first time he made
Chess Clocks in our Country. From this period the competitions became
time bound and the players also practiced to play in particular time.
Afterwards Bhaurao requested Vasantrao, the industrialist in Pune to
sponsor the Competition in the memory of Late. Shridhar Keshav Vaidya,
the father of Vasantrao Vaidya. On 14th January 1968 Shrimant Vijaysinharaje
and Rajmata Mrs. Padminiraje Parwardhan took interest in the competition
and invited the players of Mandal including Bhau. In first Vaidya competition24
players participated. As the amount of the prize was increased the Competitors
from other states participated. For mare than 34 years the competition
has been recognized as International Rating Competition.
In 1958, Bhaurao took lead to start Dr. Vasudeo Narayan Desai, Silver
Shield Competition. Shri. Rajabhau Desai and Dr. Devikumar Desiderated
Silver Shield for the Competition. In1969 Bhaurao held Govindas Sitaram
Shedji Competition for the players under 19 years. In 1976 he started
Sou. Sitabai Ramchandra Bhide Competition for women. Shri Mamasaheb
Bhide the industrialist, and his brothers gave donation for this competition.
For the same Competition Shri. Bhaupalrao Arwade offered Silver Shiled
in the memory of his wife late Chandratai Arwade, for the first prizewinner.
In 1976 bhau Started Shrimant Dadasaheb Gadgil Competition for the players
under 16 years. Shrimant Dajisaheb Gadgil saraf donated for the competition
Shri. Kanchanrao Sathe gave Silver Shield for the competition in the
memory of his father Late Vasantrao Sathe. In 1984, Kakasaheb Tikekar
Smruti competition was held for the players under 19 Years for which
Shri. Tikekar gave donation. In 1983 the competition for the players
under 13 was started in memory of Tammannacharya Padsalgikar. The Padsalgikars
sponcer the competition and they give the Prizes.
He has been organizing the competitions for many years. But he is neither
tired nor feels up of this. As in chess the name of the game is patience.
He fulfilled his dream by organizing many competions. He also made Buddhibal
famous and interesting among people. In 1979 taking lead he organized
National Chess Competition for woman. About 44 woman participants from
14 States participated in that Competition. Bhagyshree Sathe a player
of Nutan Buddhibal Mandal got 4th place, went board for the competition
for the first time. The competitions for sub-junior boys / girls proved
successful in Nov-Dec. 1985. 86 boys and 20 girls participated in the
competition in 1991 there was a little change in this competitions Bhaurao
noted the difference of age and intelligence level between the players
of 8 years and 13 years. It may affect the performance of the young
player. Thinking this, these Competitions were divided into 8, 10, 12
and 14 Further Bhaurao met distinguished personalities and requested
them to sponsor these competitions. To add to this he actually got donations
for prizes and for catering the participants. These competitions and
sponsors all as follows -
1) Late Tammannacharya padsalgikar National Open Competition for the
players under eight years. The Padsalgikars Sponsor the Competition.
2) Late Sou. Latatai Ramchandra Deshpande Smruti National open Competition
for the players under 10 years which is Sponsored by Deshpande Family.
3) Hon Pramod Ganu has Sponsored Late Abasaheb Ganu (Adv) Smruti National
Open Competition for the players under 12 years.
4) Late Dr. T. D. Hathiram National Open Competition for the players
under 14 years is Sponsored by Tavaria Family.
The most remarkable thing about these competitions is in India there
are no such matches under the age of 8, 10, 12, 14 and also 16, 19 Moreover
the competition for woman is also worth mention Besides that the national
competitions for all categories are held in sangli itself. Bhau proves
that there is always room for the generous people. They are ever ready
for such good deeds. Truly speaking Bhaurao is one of the kind. He devoted
his life for chess. And his dream came true.
The first to attend international Competition in England is nobody but
Vinayakrao Khadilkar who is a great player of Nutan Buddhibal Mandal.
Bhalchandra Parashuram Mhaiskar is Second member of Mandal, who participated
in competition held in Russia in 1956 Bhagyshri Sathe is third in the
series who attended the competitions in Matta in the year 1980-81.
Then she never turned back she showed her super-deeper performance in
France, England, Poland, Switzerland, Bangaladesh, Dubai. Today Vadiraj
jahagirdar, Krishna jahagirdar, Vinayak Natu are glowing players Rajesh
Shidore, pradeep Nikam, Datta Deval, Mahesh Limaye, Sanjay Todakar,
